The first thing you will notice is that it’s big and heavy, even though the size isn’t much different from regular 15″ laptops, and it’s lighter than my Acer Aspire. Also, keep in mind that the surface is slippery, so you need a laptop skin to protect it.
The power supply unit (that doesn’t look like a power supply) is small, light, and can charge the battery up to 60% in ~1h30. For the first time since I got my previous laptops, I’m using an SSD, and it feels like a whole new world! Everything starts in less than ~10s (even though I’ve disabled many services), and it boots faster than any other machine that has ever touched me (first thing: enabled booting to desktop and disabled all startup services).

- The microphone is a joke – even though it’s placed on top of the keyboard, you’ll get a lot of background noise, and other people won’t be able to hear you properly.
- There are only 2 USB 3.0 ports, so I had to buy a cheap USB hub to avoid constantly plugging/unplugging USB sticks every time I start this laptop.
- No CD drive

It’s one of the most excellent Windows laptops we’ve ever seen, at a $750 price point that shames Apple and other PC makers for charging almost double, if not triple, what you’d pay for this machine. But to understand why it’s so amazing at its price, let’s go back to that most amazing thing I just said:
I’m talking about a laptop with a Core i7-8550U processor, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of PCIe solid-state storage. That’s the configuration we’ve been testing at PC Labs and can verify as accurate. And it costs $750. How do they do it? Xiaomi’s approach is to maximize hardware performance and minimize everything else. So you’ll get an excellent display, long battery life, lightning-fast storage speed, ports galore (including USB Type-C), and more. But it won’t have frills like a touchscreen or any extra features you don’t need (that nickel coating on the lid notwithstanding). It’s like the opposite of Apple.
And that brings us to what I’m about to tell you: If you take one look at the Mi NoteBook and think, “Nah, it looks too much like an Apple MacBook Air,” yeah, OK. You might be on to something there. Xiaomi has succeeded in creating a laptop that looks a lot like the MacBook Air from every angle.
